Gera. A new owner is being sought for the popular tourist restaurant in Heinrichsgrün with over 100 years of history.
The dining room with the tables still set looks as if time has stood still, as if it only had to be unlocked and everything could continue seamlessly. "Closed until further notice due to bereavement," is written handwritten on a note in the display case next to the gate to the "Kuckucksdiele". A gate that has been closed since autumn 2022, when time abruptly stood still in the traditional Gera restaurant.
First interested parties for restaurant with over 100 years of history
After the death of the long-time innkeeper and owner of the restaurant, who took over the family business in Heinrichsgrün in 1989, the question now is what will happen next with the popular excursion destination on Faulenzerweg.
Since December, the Gera-based company Weidener Immobilien has been entrusted with finding a buyer for the restaurant, including furniture, high-quality kitchen, operator's apartment and around 4000 square meter of land, on behalf of the owner. "No leaseholders or tenants, it's about buying," says Marcel Weidener, who is in charge of marketing with his father Dieter Weidener. He can report: "There are already interested parties." Although the purchase price is still 999,000 euros. "It is an absolutely traditional restaurant in great condition and also in demand, the books were full," says Marcel Weidener, who was also a guest at the restaurant himself.
First mentioned in 1915 in connection with a local allotment garden, "Meinhardts Gartenlokal" was expanded into a restaurant in 1936, as can be seen from the historical outline in the menu. Accordingly, the name "Kuckucksdiele" goes back to a regular guest at the time and has gradually become established.
In 1999 we decided to tear down the old building and replace it with a new one," says the short chronicle of the "Kuckucksdiele". With many details and in the style of a hunting lodge, a large open dining room was created on two floors, with a gallery and various separate parlors and guest rooms. There is talk of a total of 200 seats inside, as well as up to 100 seats outside, against the backdrop of the Gera city forest. Before the 100th anniversary could be celebrated in 2015, which is also immortalized with a certificate on the wall of the restaurant, the restaurant was also hit by flooding in 2013.
